Favorite Places - Maggie's Attic - Mount Dora


It ain’t your average wine bar. Maggie’s Attic has been serving as Florida’s living room since 2003. Tucked away in downtown Mount Dora in a cobblestone alleyway, tourists often stumble across Maggie’s by accident, and are pleasantly surprised to find a hideaway to take a break from shopping and enjoy a glass of wine, a cold beer, or just the great company.
A family-run business, you will likely encounter the store manager Jerome or his sister Addie, and Mama Stephanie is there almost every afternoon to greet you and talk about the latest goings-on. Locals bring their leashed furry friends and Maggie’s is happy to give them a treat, a bowl of water, and some serious snuggles.
I discovered Maggie’s almost a decade ago, and have felt like part of the Maggie’s family ever since. There are no strangers in Maggie’s; everyone is welcome.  (Even mermaids!) Tourists and locals easily mingle and trade tales of their travels and adventures. Several cozy seating areas among the towering racks of wine make a comfy place to chat with friends or begin a romantic evening. Tourists who stop in for “just one” often find themselves wiling away a whole afternoon in the comfortable atmosphere Maggie’s is famous for.
Can we talk about the wine?! Maggie’s selection is second to none; their prices are competitive and their pours are generous. There is an impressive list of wines by the glass and a huge selection of craft beer. Twice a month Maggie’s Wine Walk brings hundreds to taste a variety of wines and explore the nearby Mount Dora shops.  Locals as well as folks from metro Orlando and The Villages regularly attend the Wine Walk, and most are Wine Club members.
Come as you are. For merfolk and boaters you can dock just a block away, and the marina is within walking distance. If you come by seaplane you can dock at nearby Lakeside Inn. Soon the train will return to Tavares and can transport people between the Tavares waterfront and Mount Dora.
Downtown Mount Dora can be a magical place and Maggie’s Attic is the heart of it. In my travels I always find a place the locals love, and I fall in love with it too. Maggie’s is that place.

The Thing About Grief

Grief is love with no place to go. In the last decade I’ve watched love ones succumb to cancer. I’ve lost beloved pets. My marriage ended. I'm well-acquainted with grief. Here’s the thing about grief: It isn't linear. It isn’t something you get through. It is waves pounding the shore over and over again. There are moments of calm and there are moments of near-drowning. It changes you. It becomes a part of you, forever. You will never completely let go. But you will survive. You will keep swimming. Here’s the thing about love: It doesn’t diminish. The well is full, and always will be. Always. You will love again. Love is abundant in you. Do not quench it in the name of grief. Feel the loss. Feel the love. Feel gratitude for the time you shared with those you loved. And know that you're okay. Grief doesn’t end, but one day, when you are holding a memory, it won’t hurt quite as much, and you will smile through the tears.

8 Haunted Places in Central Florida You Didn't Know About!

I thought a blog about haunted places nearby would be apropos for Halloween. When I began researching I was blown away by the number of haunted places in Florida! Some of those I will revisit later but for now here are eight places within swimming distance for me. Enjoy! LAKESIDE INN - MOUNT DORA Several ghosts are known to reside in the charming Lakeside Inn, which was built in 1883 and is the oldest continuously operating hotel in Florida. Two of the inn’s ghosts are young girls from the 1890s to 1920s. One is about nine years of age who wears a frilly red dress. She is believed to be Amy, a little girl who disappeared from the inn in 1892. The other is a girl around 12 who wears a blue dress and is often seen in the dining room. She’s been known to move the chandeliers and chairs. Also seen at the inn are the apparitions of a man in a top hat and a gangster in a fedora.
